If you’ve ever stood in a massive, winding queue at the Disney Springs bus depot or waited at the marina after a long evening of shopping and dining, you know how packed those routes can get. Trying to get back to your room at Port Orleans or Saratoga Springs after a few hours of walking can sometimes mean waiting through multiple full buses or boats.

Starting June 28, 2026, Walt Disney World is stepping in to make that trip back to your resort a whole lot smoother. Disney is permanently implementing transportation verification procedures at Disney Springs, reserving resort-bound buses and the Sassagoula River Cruise boats exclusively for registered hotel guests and visitors with confirmed resort reservations.

While this permanently closes a long-standing transportation workaround, it is a massive win for on-site guests who will finally see shorter wait times and guaranteed empty seats on their journey home. Let’s dive into exactly how this system works, who is affected, and how you can still easily enjoy resort-hopping on your next vacation.

The New Rules: What’s Changing on June 28?

This isn't a brand-new idea, but rather the permanent rollout of a system Disney has been quiet-testing for months. Following successful preliminary tests during busy periods like New Year's and Easter, the policy is officially becoming permanent just ahead of the busy July 4th holiday week.

Starting next week, anyone wishing to board a resort-bound bus or a Sassagoula River Cruise ferry boat from Disney Springs must clear a verification checkpoint before boarding.

This verification applies specifically to:

  • All Walt Disney World Resort buses departing from the Disney Springs bus loop.
  • The Sassagoula River Cruise water taxis departing the Disney Springs marina bound for Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, Disney’s Old Key West Resort, and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa (including the Treehouse Villas).

How the Verification Process Works

To make sure things move quickly, Disney is keeping the check-in process simple. Before you enter the boarding queue for a resort bus or watercraft, Cast Members will be stationed at the entrance with hand-held scanners.

To pass through the checkpoint and board, you must present or scan one of the following:

  1. An active Walt Disney World Resort hotel reservation: This can be scanned directly from your MagicBand, Disney MagicMobile pass, or physical room key card.
  2. A confirmed dining reservation: If you are staying off-site but have an Advance Dining Reservation at a resort restaurant, showing your confirmation in the My Disney Experience app will grant you access.
  3. A confirmed resort recreation booking: Those with bookings for resort activities (such as a guided fishing excursion or pontoon boat rental) can show their reservation confirmation to clear the queue.

If you do not meet one of these criteria, the Cast Members will kindly direct you to alternative transport options.

Why This Is a Major Win for Resort Guests

For years, savvy day-visitors and locals have utilized a well-known shortcut: parking for free at the Disney Springs garages, boarding a resort bus to a hotel adjacent to a park (like taking a Contemporary Resort bus to walk to Magic Kingdom Park), and bypassing the standard theme park parking fees.

While this loophole saved guests a few dollars, it came at the expense of paying resort guests. It frequently led to artificially long lines at the Disney Springs bus depots and packed water taxis, occasionally leaving resort guests waiting a long time just to get back to their rooms. By introducing permanent scanning, Disney ensures that transportation capacity is saved for the guests who are paying to stay on property or dine at the resorts.

Furthermore, this update frees up valuable parking spaces in the Lime, Orange, and Grapefruit garages at Disney Springs, making it much easier for guests who are actually visiting the Springs to find a spot during peak dinner hours.

Still Want to Resort Hop? Here’s How to Do It Right

If you are staying off-site or are a local annual passholder, do not worry—resort hopping is absolutely not banned. You are still more than welcome to visit Disney’s gorgeous resort lobbies, explore the grounds, and enjoy their world-class dining. You just need to adjust your transit strategy slightly.

Here is how you can easily and legally visit the resorts without using the Disney Springs bus loop:

  • Use Theme Park Transportation: Standard park-to-resort and park-to-park transportation remains completely unaffected. You can park at EPCOT or Disney's Hollywood Studios and take the Disney Skyliner to visit Caribbean Beach or Riviera Resort. Similarly, you can park at Magic Kingdom and ride the monorail to explore the Grand Floridian or the Contemporary.
  • Book a Dining Reservation: If there is a specific resort restaurant you want to try, booking a reservation not only secures your table but also grants you parking access directly at that resort's security gate. For example, you can grab a reservation at Saratoga Springs to try the delicious new breakfast at the Paddock Grill (which we recently highlighted in our guide on how Saratoga Springs quietly dropped a must-try new pool bar breakfast).
  • Ride-Share Directly: If you want to visit a resort without a dining reservation and don't want to deal with park parking lots, booking a quick rideshare (like Uber or Lyft) directly to the resort's drop-off area is a fast and convenient option.

Planning Ahead for Your Next Visit

This permanent policy change goes into effect on June 28, 2026. If you have an upcoming stay at Old Key West, Saratoga Springs, or Port Orleans, you can look forward to significantly shorter waits and a much more peaceful boat ride back to your resort next week!

If you are staying off-site, just make sure to plan your transit route through the theme parks or utilize rideshares to keep your resort-hopping adventures seamless. Ultimately, keeping the resort buses and watercraft dedicated to resort guests ensures that everyone—whether you're staying in a luxury villa or just popping into Disney Springs for some world-class shopping—has a much more predictable and magical vacation experience.
